La tomatina is world’s biggest food fight festival. La Tomatina, a festival held on Wednesday towards the end of August in the town of Buñol in Valencia area in Spain. Thousands of participants come from all over the world to wrestle in a harmless fight. Here more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.
The tomatoes come from Extremadura, where they are very cheap. This all starts out with the ham on a pole ritual where a challenger, with a lot of upper body muscle, obviously, climbs up the greased pole to secure the piece of ham. It honors the town’s two patron saints, Luis Bertran and Mare de Deu dels Desemparats. The signal for the beginning of the battle is firing of the cannon, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for own.
The battle that lasts for just an hour, around 150,000 tomatoes meet their fate. Surprisingly a good impact of this festival is, the village streets look quite clean with the acidity of the tomato acting as disinfectant. Mostly young generation shows a great interest and enthusiasm toward La Tomatina festival. An attempt to recreate the fest in Bangalore, India, met with harsh criticism over the ‘wastage of tomatoes’ that led to a ban of the event.
The festival was initially free for participants from 1945 to 2012. But in 2013 the Mayor of Bunol imposed a 10 euro entry fee for non-residents. And despite that, 17,000 tickets were sold just to foreigners this year. Overall this festival is a combination of tradition, honor and modern way of fun . That’s why all enthusiastic travelers from globe are coming to enjoy this festival.
